What is an Ice Dam and How to Prevent Them From Forming on Your Home This Winter Season

An ice dam is a build up of ice and or snow on your roof, typically, where the roof meets the gutter, or where your gutter meets the downspout. This can be caused by heat loss from the home, melting the cold mass of ice and snow, just enough to cause a run off that turns into icicles and more ice. This ice continues to increase in size, and becomes an ice dam. Ice dams can cause interior damage by allowing water to penetrate the home, and they can also cause extensive exterior damage by disrupting the roofing / gutter / downspout and siding system of your home.
